Corvette ABS | What You Need to Know About Antilock Braking Systems
20th Sep 2018
An anti-lock braking system, or ABS, is a car system that allows for the driver to maintain control and steering ability when braking. An ABS is crucial in that it keeps the car from skidding while braking. The system was introduced in the mid 1980s and today is standard in almost every car sold in the United States. Let’s take a look at what you need to know about anti-lock braking systems and the Corvette ABS.
How Does an Anti-Lock Braking System Work?
An anti-lock braking system allows you to maintain control of the car when braking. ABS uses wheel speed sensors to determine if one or more wheels are trying to lock up during braking. If a wheel tries to lock up, a series of hydraulic valves limit or reduce the braking on that wheel. This prevents skidding and allows the driver to maintain steering control.
Why Do Cars Need It?
ABS allows a driver to maintain complete control of the car even when having to brake hard. It does this in two ways. The first way is by stopping the car from going into a skid with all four wheels locked. It also allows you to continue to steer. This is beneficial because if you are braking hard chances are there is something in your way. Without being able to steer out of the way while braking you still might come in contact with the object.
